The Young Academic quest to find UK students all the offers, freebies and promotions they need to arm themselves for another busy academic year continues in earnest today, with a remarkable promotion from Santander. The bank are offering students who open a new student current account a free 16 to 25 railcard, which could save substantial money on travel over the course of a degree.

It is thought students who take advantage of the offer will save £30 per year on the usual purchase price of a 16-25 Railcard saving £120 over four years. This equates to an annual average saving of £174 on rail travel in the United Kingdom.  This is according to the Association of Train Operating Companies.

Discounted Rail Travel for UK Students…

The free 16-25 railcard promotion has been available with Santander since 24th June and has been going down extremely well with students in the UK who like to use the rail network to get around the country.

Steve Pateman, Head of UK Banking at Santander, commented: “Now students have even more reason to choose Santander as their current account provider.

“Student accounts are an important sector for Santander and getting a free Railcard is a great opportunity for students to save money on travel. Santander also offers online banking, branches on campus, apps and mobile banking – everything a student needs.

“Our Student Current Account gives you a 0% overdraft up to £2,000 and 1% AER interest on credit balances up to £500.”

Santander, through its Santander Universities Global Division, has supported higher education in the UK since 2007 by providing funding towards scholarships, mobility grants, internships with SMEs, entrepreneurial activities and more. Currently 66 UK universities are partnering with the Bank and more will be joining in before the end of year. Worldwide over 1,020 universities in 20 countries collaborate with Santander Universities. In 2012 alone the Bank invested €130 million in universities.

David Mapp, Commercial Director of ATOC, said: “The 16-25 Railcard is one of our most popular discount cards, thanks to the considerable savings it offers to young people.
“Train companies know that many people today, students in particular, need to cut costs wherever possible. With an average saving of £174 a year, the four-year Santander 16-25 Railcard will allow holders to save hundreds of pounds when enjoying a day out or travelling to visit family and friends.”
